A splash of cold water woke me up. They had already removed me from the chains, but I was sleeping too hard to notice.
Reid and two of his men stood above me. “It’s your lucky day, Paul.”
I raised an eyebrow, too weak to speak.
“Galen delivered on the scroll,” Reid said. “And it’s authentic. We will now move you to the safe house, as promised, where you will stay for the foreseeable future.”
I nodded. Good. Keeping me alive also allowed them to use me for potential blackmail or if they needed anything else in the future. His men dressed me in my old clothes, put a black bag over my head and drove me away.
The journey took about thirty minutes, then we walked for a moment, and then I was in a house with four armed men. They exchanged nods with those who brought me, grabbed me by the shoulders and led me forward.
I focused. The house had its insides decorated with wood, floor creaking under our steps. We passed a pair of closed doors and entered a room with cages. Well, fuck. They stuffed me into one cage and closed it behind me.
I had to press my knees against my chest to be able to sit inside. Four other cages with people stood in the room. One had a girl who was barely ten, two had older men, over sixty, and the last one had Galen’s son. I sat in the cage, doing my best to look terrified.
The men who brought me remained inside to guard the room, sitting at the table in the middle.
The young girl sat calmly in her cage. She must have been here for a long time. Galen’s son had his face covered with dried tears. Well, time to grow up. Of the older men, one looked terrified and the other had made peace with his situation. I wasn’t too tired but decided to take a nap. Better give them time to leave this place with as few guards as possible.
