To go even further, Chat — an add-on to RCS — is part of the preinstalled Google Messages app. With Chat, you can add others to a group conversation, see (by way of a small animation) when others are typing, share higher-quality photos, let recipients know when you’ve read their messages, and benefit from end-to-end encryption. To take advantage of these features, all (or both) participants in a conversation must have these chat features turned on. If they don’t, the messages are sent by regular SMS or MMS.
