After their conversation Sara heard nothing for a long time. She assumed that Jim was just as indifferent to finding out anything awkward as the rest of the board. But suddenly Cyle was sacked. Sara learned that a massive audit had been carried out and that they had found hundreds of thousands of crowns missing on the accounts. The board hadn’t just sacked Cyle, they had also reported him to the police. Then they put the lid on it. No further information was forthcoming from the board.

Sara discovered to her horror that now they had put Veronica in sole charge of the money and the business. When Veronica had realized that the audit was an unavoidable fact and that she and Cyle would be uncovered, she had switched sides. She had been most helpful and heart-broken when she realized how Cyle had tried to cheat the club of money! She helped the board in every way to sort out all the strange transactions. That way she had also managed to conceal her cooperation with Cyle. Without hesitation she had left him to the mercy of the board, which had finally woken up.

It didn’t help when Cyle tried to tell them that he was innocent and that it was Veronica who was the brains behind all the transactions. Veronica, overwrought and weeping, had complained to the board how Cyle had even managed to pull the wool over her eyes. The blue-eyed board gratefully accepted her offer to take care of the finances and the day-today expenses for the time being.

So there was no great change in spite of everything. Instead of Cyle and Veronica draining the club of money together, she did it on her own. She was far more adept than Cyle had been and now she had a little more scope for action. Nobody knew that Veronica was well experienced in this field. Her speciality was draining the money from companies and then disappearing. Her previous ‘subject’ was several millions the poorer. Both of her parents helped her with the business, but behind the scenes. So far things had gone well for the family; there were already several millions on foreign bank accounts and more was to follow. The only cause for concern at the moment was Sara.

Veronica thought back over the rewarding conversations she had had with two of the police officers in the Mounted Police. Hadn’t one of them been called Ulrich? He and his colleague had let it be understood that they were not a bit keen on having Sara back in the police force. They were also terrified that she might appeal to the Ombudsman about an appointment, for which she felt she had been discriminated against.

Veronica realized that they had a shared interest. One of the police officers had even said that he was prepared to assist her if in some way they could help each other to get Sara out of the way. Veronica pondered over how best to exploit the situation. Getting
