In blinding Minnesota winter sun

one of the older brothers

would hoist a kid up, pick-a-back, and run.

I was 3 or 4; John trundled me round the yard

ducked suddenly into a dark wood shed

striking me blind. Against my face

some rough pelted thing swayed frozen.

Recovering sight

screamed, screamed like a banshee, a child

gone mad for terror;

a frozen timber wolf's death-head

hung by a thong from the rafters, eyes open

bloody mouth

The stuff of nightmares or of dental chairs.

In Danbury Clinic

I urge the wary inmates; open wide now; a superannuated

paraclete, all in white

for the liturgy; needles and drills

needles and drills. Domestic policy, we juice

America's pain to sleep
