CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Katie’s Journal

Today was supposed to be a peaceful day at the park, but when you have a demon riding shotgun in your brain, nothing's ever truly peaceful. I sat on a bench overlooking the water, trying to enjoy the ocean breeze and the squawking seagulls. You'd think it would be relaxing, right? Wrong. Instead, I was shoving donuts into my face like there was no tomorrow, hoping against hope that Pandora would shut her trap for one goddamn minute.

No such luck. The gluttonous bitch in my head moaned with every bite, and I swear I felt her savoring each sugary morsel. Calvin looked at me like I'd grown a second head. I snapped, "What? I'm hungry, and my demon is a glutton." I probably spewed crumbs everywhere, but fuck it. When you're dealing with demonic possession, table manners take a backseat.

Calvin tried to put a positive spin on it. "It's so crazy to me that you guys share pretty much everything. It's like you have a partner inside." If he only knew.

I scoffed. "I wouldn't call her a partner so much as a hostage-taker." My stomach was already protesting, and I groaned, covering it with my hand. "But it could be worse. At least she gives me some badass power behind my kicks." I paused, realizing I'd said too much. "Though I haven't revealed that to Korbin yet. I don't know how he would feel about it."

Partners? Ha! I’m a hostage in this fleshy prison, not some willing accomplice in your pathetic life. As for the “badass power,” you’re starting to shape up enough that I’m not entirely embarrassed by your physical abilities. Not that you know the true extent of what I could do if I were unleashed.

Calvin got all philosophical on me while staring out at the ocean. "Change is hard. But with the current situation, this evolution of your relationship may be what is needed to take these beasts down."

I rolled my eyes. "Not all of them will be on board with that idea, I'm sure." The thought of Korbin's face if he found out I was using demonic powers wasn't pretty.

Calvin talked about his demon then, some water spirit called a Nickar. That's why he's so fond of San Diego now. Go figure. When he asked if Pandora could persuade his demon to give him some support, I almost laughed. Instead, I had to have an internal negotiation with my resident pain in the ass.

You humans, always wanting us to solve your problems. We’re not here to hold hands and sing Kumbaya around a circle of hellfire, you know.

True to form, Pandora was a bitch about it. "How very demon-like of you to ask the other side to help defeat themselves," she grumbled. "He does realize that as demons we use pain and torture while you meat sacks use friendship, soap operas, and donuts?"

I bit back a snort. "We do what we can," I told her. "What do you say?"

"I might be able to," she snapped.
