Figure 7.2 Causes of hailstones

The annual cost of hail to crops and property in the US is about $1 billion dollars, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). There were 5411 major hail storms in 2015 according to US statistics, with a hailstone event described as ‘major’ when comprising hailstones of more than 1 inch (25mm) diameter. Table 7.1 identifies the top five US States for major hail events in 2015. In the US, there were 5.9 auto damage claims due to hail per 1,000 insured vehicle years in 2011, compared with 2.9 in 2008 and 2009 and 2.7 in 2010.16
