Networking with Students
This is really good if you can do it because some students grow up to become successful people later on. Youâre playing the long game. If you can make friends with students, maybe down the road they will grow up to become something. Now you know people in all these industries that youâve built friendships and relationships with. Itâs a beautiful thing.
So, for example, I was in Nicaragua attending Spanish classes. There was a teacher at this school who was teaching English to a bunch of law school students.
He asked me, âWould you mind coming to the class to help some of my students practice their English conversations?â
I said, âSure.â So, I went, helped out, and made friends with those law school students while helping them with their English.
These friendships flourished as the years passed, and some became very successful lawyers, some became university professors, while the rest went into other professions and occupations. Weâre still friends and have been for a long time, so that really helps my network in that country. I put the time in, and it has paid off BIG TIME.
I got to know them as they sprouted out into the world. I was a resource for them because I was older and farther along in my life journey and had experience. I had the opportunity to be a bit of a mentor to some of them.
I would say, âFeel free to reach out and use me as a resource. Maybe I can help you out in some way. Let me know.â
And so, as these people advanced through the ranks in their own lives, theyâd say, âYou know, I know this one guy. I know Nick.â And they know I travel a lot, and they might be going somewhere. âIâm trying to do this; who do you know? Can you help me out here?â
And Iâd say, âYeah, yeah, yeah. What can I do? Where are you trying to go? Who are you trying to meet?â
If you just so happen to currently be a student, itâs definitely easy to network with other students. If you are not a student, itâs good to network with some as long as itâs in a professional way.
You donât want it to be creepy or weird. But if itâs something like this where youâre volunteering, helping people with their language, or are a judge at their university competition, try to meet as many students as you can and help them out whenever you can because you never know. And if you can help them, youâre helping a friend, a friend now and a friend in the future. People remember stuff like that. Itâs really good to have connections like that. So, if you have the opportunity, do it.
