For the purposes of this book, a dedicated digital camera is defined as one that requires a computer for controlling exposure and storing the image. These cameras are not designed for handheld photography but must be mounted on to a microscope (Fig. 36). Their use is integrated with a computer which provides the preview screen for framing and composing the subject as well as the operational controls for exposure, contrast and white balance. Picture files are stored on the computer, and the typical arrangement is to serially transfer data from camera to computer. Typically, the cameras are meant to be mounted via a C-mount on a photo tube, and are designed to work with a small sensor of 0.6 to 3.2 megapixels. Such cameras are advantageous when working under low light conditions such as working with fluorescence.
