Echinacea Teas

There are two methods for preparing herbal tea: infusion and decoction. An infusion is best for brewing a plant’s leaves, flowers, berries, or seeds. These ingredients easily release their essential oils and valuable nutrients when steeped in hot water—and easily lose them when simmered. A decoction is made from roots, barks, and the more woody parts of the plant. Simmering is necessary for these materials to release their valuable properties.

Combinations

When both roots and leaves are used, the basic technique is to infuse and decoct—simmer the roots for at least 20 minutes, remove the pot from the heat, add the leaves, stir well, then cover and steep at least 15 to 20 minutes.
