Twenty minutes later they entered the grounds of an abandoned factory less than a mile from Tilbury Docks, but secure, and isolated from passing traffic and prying eyes. They drove down an old pothole-ridden road that hadn’t been repaired for many years, and which hadn’t seen much traffic, before reaching their secluded and gated destination. The gates had been repaired, oiled, and utilised as an extra layer of defence or shelter should anyone get too close. The factory itself had been abandoned almost twenty years earlier and was not quite close enough to the docks to benefit from the improvements the area had received since, although it was only a matter of time when that ongoing development reached it. It was surrounded by trees and overgrown bushes that made it difficult to spot from anywhere, making it a great place to conduct this part of the operation.

Despite it having been abandoned for so long it was in surprisingly good condition, with no broken windows or leaking roofs. It was a solid building, built just before the start of World War Two, to produce bricks and tiles. It had somehow escaped the ravages of the war and had remained intact.

Trevor had known of this place for some time now and had considered buying it for the land, recognising the potential. Having seen it again now he nodded in appreciation and turned to Kendra. ‘This is as good a location as anywhere,’ he said. He was also now reconsidering its purchase.

‘It looks very secure, perfect for what we need.’

He had sent his trusted team ahead many days earlier. They had cleared out dozens of rooms, most of them on the first floor where the old offices had been. There were also many on the ground floor and some in the basement. Trevor had given instructions for the doors to be checked and secured with new padlocks. The rooms would also be equipped with buckets, toilet paper, and extra-strong garden refuse sacks for the disposal of waste. Much like the refugees had been given on the Golden Ray 2. Each room was checked to ensure there was no possibility of escape, and the ones that were selected to hold future ‘guests’ would include something to secure them to as additional insurance.

The room set aside for Dervishi was extra special, with his size and strength in mind. It was one of several old storerooms that had been used to store the factory’s tools. They would typically be locked overnight and had old prison-type wooden doors with a small, barred window just high enough to look in and make sure everything was secure. There was no window. It was almost perfect for the task. Inside the room, they had placed a large blue gym mat and provided a blanket, along with the bucket that was close enough to reach. The back wall was lined with floor-to-ceiling metal shelving, which was bolted in place, top and bottom.

Dervishi was carried into the room, awake but groggy, and dumped unceremoniously onto the mat.
