"You're on a plane first thing tomorrow." Knight slammed the tumbler of whisky on the steel surface of the kitchen island of his loft, the taste of his own blood from the deep cut at his lip still lingering on his tongue.
Angst riddled his chest as the alcohol made his way down his throat. Visions of Bryce writhing on the tombstone was still branded in his mind.
"What? No, I canât leave." Bryce, sitting across him in her crumpled and muddy pantsuit, sipped her white wine slowly, her soft hazel eyes assessing him coolly over the rim of the wineglass.
They had both needed a restoring drink after the attack and his loft was the obvious safest place.
"You have to leave Seattle. I can't protect you." The way she held herself so composed after what she'd lived through made him ache even more. She had almost died, and without his magic he could not keep her safe.
And at the moment, he could only think of her safety. Seaport was the best place for her, with Celeste there and Thornwood and damn, even his father.
She set her glass carefully on the counter and edged closer as she eyed him. "You need me to get your magic back."
"Yes. But your security is more important." His gaze wandered over the tender curve of her mouth and luscious mane of red copper, now flowing around her shoulders over the silky blouse. His beaten body begged to find relief in her arms.
But no.
She had to be far away from him. Sweat beaded at the base of his neck with the thought of Merritt getting anywhere near her.
"You said I can't leave your loft without you," she pointed out.
"Here." He took her delicate hand in his and put a key into her palm. He closed her fingers over it with his hand, the skin of his knuckles still raw from the fight. "This is the key to my place. You're free to leave whenever you want."
"Knightley." A severe frown creased her brow. "I can't leave you here like this."
"Oh yes, you can. And you will. You'll run back to Seaport. Find the alchemist Thornwood Huntington. He'll break you free from the key."
Even as he said the words, he knew it would kill him to see her go, but she had to be safe. That was what really mattered.
"Knight, I caused this. I have to help."
"Bryce." He sighed, reached for a strand of her glossy red hair resting on her breast to let it slide between his thumb and forefinger.
Man, she was perfect. The hot curvy body tamed by the professional suit, still looking sharp despite the wrinkled fabric and partially torn blouse. Her calm demeanor. Everything about her was what he was not. She would never run away from her problems as he had done when he avoided his dad.
In fact, she faced them.
She grabbed his fist in both hands, the touch soothing upon the rough cuts. Her hazel eyes shined in the soft glow of the loftâs lights.
