Chapter Four

Awakening

Jürgen closed the binder and looked over at Abigail. She was staring at the fire. Finally, she spoke. “What an incredible story, Mr. Hirschberg. I had no idea.”

Jürgen nodded. “I read you this story so you might see what real oppression looks like. During World War II, the Nazis sent over five million of our people to the camps. The Jews call it The Holocaust.”

“Tommy never told me about that.”

“Well, it didn’t fit into his worldview, now did it?” He saw the question in her eyes. “Here’s what I would suggest, young lady. There’s an excellent library in town, and it has access to the internet. Go do some of your own research. Look up the history of the Jews on that piece of land the anti-Semites call Palestine. See if you can find some articles about what really goes on in Israel. I think you will be very surprised.”

Abigail nodded. “I can see I might.” She hesitated. “But, Mr. Hirschberg, I don’t know how long I will be here. I must get back to California somehow. I can’t just take advantage of your kindness forever.”

Jürgen shook his head. “There’s nobody there for you. Where will you go?”

Abigail looked down. “I don’t know.” A whisper.

Jürgen pulled out his pipe. “I’ve been thinking about that. I talked to my friends at the restaurant in town, and they will have an opening for a waitress in the spring, when the tourist season starts. I’m thinking you might like to park here until then. Maybe get your life sorted out. Think about what you want to do with it.”

Abigail looked up, her eyes wide. “Really, Mr. Hirschberg? But you don’t even know me very well. And I’ve made such a mess of my life.”

Jürgen chuckled. “I told you when we met my papa taught me how to read people. And I’ve been reading you. Underneath all that worldly-wise you put on, I see a nice young lady—who’s kind of lost her way. We all get suckered, but that doesn’t make us bad people, just foolish. You can look at your mistakes and learn from them. And I’ve decided I like you. So, what say you?”

“Oh, Mr. Hirschberg! I don’t know what to say.”

“Just say yes. And I think it’s time you started calling me Uncle Jürgen.”

Abigail looked at her uncle and then put her face in her hands and cried. “Why are you so kind to me?”

“I figure you need a little kindness in your life.” He paused and smiled. “But you’ll still have to help out around here.”

“Oh, I will, I promise… Uncle Jürgen.”

Jürgen decided he liked that.

Abigail composed herself. “I… I have another question, Uncle Jürgen. About the story.”

“Shoot.”

“Well, Gerd and Emily both became Christians. I thought the Amish were already Christians.”

Jürgen was silent for a minute. “I suppose you guessed I’m a Christian?”

“Well,… I was thinking along those lines, yes.”

“Just so you know, Abigail, I’m not a Christian because my parents were Amish or Jewish. I’m a Christian by choice.
