Chapter 8

She sauntered down the short steps of Grand Park Concert Hall with joy.

“Nailed it!” Raven shouted at Thorn waiting for her on the cobblestoned street. “Never ever seen this happen at an audition. But they told me right away. They want me back for the last one.”

She watched the slow smile cross his lips. The corner of his eyes softened. “Congrats,” he said, his tone poised.

She still couldn’t believe she’d done it. After she’d rushed in to her interview, disheveled and stunned from the evil attack she’d experienced, it had taken all her training to block it out and focus on her music. But as soon as the first note hit, the music had carried her through. She’d own the hall’s stage with every powerful bow stroke.

“Thank you,” she said quietly, forcing herself to calm her excitement. There was still one more hoop to jump through. The final and decisive audition in one week.

She eyed Thorn as the happy news sunk in. Her grip tightened on the handle of her violin case. Thornwood Huntington had stolen what was most precious to her, but the shadow being attack of today had made her understand why.

He’d had no choice.

He was not the monster she had painted him to be.

Nonna had been right after all. There were seriously valid reasons for Thornwood to hide from the world. If he had to consistently battle dark forces targeting innocents, he couldn’t fully be responsible for others.

But she would not think of this now. “Let’s celebrate,” she told him brightly.

“I still need to be with your violin.” He cast a look behind them and she was reminded that anything could happen at any time.

“I know. And it’s far from being over yet. I do have the final audition. But I need to celebrate every single victory. And right now, I’d like a fruity drink in a lively place. Enjoy this for a couple of hours. And I want you to come with me.”

A puzzled look crossed his expression, quickly dismissed. He smiled lazily again and shrugged into his long black duster. “Sure. I guess you deserve it.”

Two hours later, filled with too many cocktails, Raven strode alongside Thorn through the small park by the shore to take in the fresh spring air.

The new grass felt soft under her heels, the sky above them was lit with stars. She could hear the sound of waves crashing gently on the boardwalk by the dunes.

She had caught him up on her music-filled childhood, her large extended Italian family, and the foreign travels she had experienced as a violinist for the Youth Symphony. Through it all, he’d mainly remained quiet but attentive.

“I talk too much, sorry.” She stepped lightly on her heels, careful with her steps on the grass, the alcohol making her woozy.

“No worries.” He offered her his arm and she gratefully tucked her hand at the crook of his elbow.

“I’m just so happy to have made it that far.” She sought the warmth of his solid body, distracted by his masculine clean scent.
