We closed every big deal we ever attempted—not a single one cratered or went off the rails. Part of that was luck; a lot of it was management focus. Ours was no democracy—I was in charge. Only one person can have final authority before going to the board. And in the final analysis I was the guy making those decisions, because that was my responsibility. CEOs don’t get paid to be team players; they get paid to be team leaders. At least that’s how I saw it, and that’s how I played it for the seventeen years I had the honor and privilege of serving as the chairman and CEO of the company formerly known as Southwestern Bell—now known to the world as AT&T. If things had gone wrong, that would have been on my head, too. And rightly so. But they went right a lot more often than they went wrong, I’m happy to report, so I guess we did okay.
