Royal Highland Emigrants 2nd Battalion (for 1st Bn, see under Canada.) Raised from June 12, 1775 from Highland veterans settled in colonies; battalion establishment 610 all ranks in ten companies, under Maj John Small, with HQ in Halifax. Part of unit sent to relief of Fort Cumberland, November 1776. In early July 1777 a detachment with some Royal Marines routed an American force at the St John River (now St John, New Brunswick), then rebuilt and garrisoned Fort Howe. Regiment designated 84th Foot, December 25, 1778. Detachments posted in several localities: in 1779 there were 100 men at Windsor, 50 at Cornwallis, 100 at Annapolis and 120 at the St John River; one company was at Placentia, Newfoundland, 1778–83. Five companies sent to Charleston, SC, in April 1781 were present at Eutaw Springs and other engagements; to New York in April 1782. Unit ordered disbanded in Nova Scotia on October 10, 1783, but actually disbanded only in 1784, most of the men settling in Hants County. Uniform: see Plate D.
