‘We ought to have that mountain’ were the words of General Pershing when he first viewed Mont Sec; towering 380 metres above the Woevre lowland. From Mont Sec, which the Germans were holding in strength, they had dominated the entire St. Mihiel salient for four years. It took the American Fourth Army just over a day to capture the lot. During the battle the 1st Division simply smothered Mont Sec with smoke and went round it. Brigadier-General F. E. Bamford, 2 Brigade, 1st Division is seen here scanning the ground. 83US
