They still havenât passed the ERA.
I know. And it makes me mad! Amelia was also one of the founders of the Ninety-Nines, an organization of female pilots.
I know why it was called the Ninety-Nines. Because thatâs the number of members it had at the beginning. And today they have over six thousand.
Speaking of the Ninety-Nines, in 1929 there was a race just for female pilots. The first woman to fly from California to Cleveland, Ohio, would win eight thousand dollars. The race was officially called the Womenâs Air Derby. But Will Rogers nicknamed it the Powder Puff Derby, and that name stuck. Nineteen women entered the race. Sixteen finished. Three of the planes crashed. One pilot, Marvel Crosson, died. Amelia came in third.
