CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Marcus and Shorty said little as they headed to the city centre. Marcus drove, Shorty sitting in the back of the car, deep in thought. The humiliation he felt still hadn’t ebbed away, the desire for revenge burning within. He was lucky Deez was such a fool. Deez wouldn’t get the chance to spread around what happened to too many people.

Not if Shorty had anything to say about it.

‘You good?’ Marcus eventually asked.

‘I should have handled my business.’

‘Yeah, you should have. Shit happens, though. Don’t let him get by you again.’

‘I won’t. I’ve got you backing me instead of Charlie this time.’

‘Leave Charlie alone,’ said Marcus. ‘Deez had the drop on you lot from the get-go. That can’t be helped. Charlie has more than handled his business in the past.’

Shorty didn’t respond. That was Marcus all over, though. He defended his people as long as they stayed loyal to him. Shorty would let him have it, but he knew that if it had been he and K-Bar, or he and Marcus, the result would have been much different.

They finally made it into town, immediately besieged by the loud music and flashing lights from the various clubs still open. A few people were on the streets, talking in groups, smoking and drinking, with wary bouncers at various venues keeping their beady eyes on them.

‘How do you wanna do this?’ Shorty asked, as they got as close to the club as they could.

‘I’ll go in and look around for him. You stay here and wait for me. I’ll drop you a text if they make a move.’

‘Nah, fuck that,’ Shorty responded. ‘I want to be in there. We’ve got a score to settle.’

Marcus shook his head.

‘You know it can’t go down like that, Shorty. Deez is a loud mouth. People in there will know what happened – or his version of it at least. If you go in there, somebody is gonna spot you and we’ll lose our shot.’

Shorty’s face contorted in petulant frustration.

‘Well what about you?’ he said.

‘What about me?’

‘You’re a big guy. Do you honestly think you can blend in and not be seen?’

‘I’ll be fine,’ Marcus responded. ‘I’ll lay low and see what’s what. If they see me, he’ll come outside anyway. Then you can have your fun. Just make sure you don’t get seen on any cameras or anything. You know what it’s like around here.

Shorty cracked his knuckles now, smiling.

‘Cool, bro. Got it. I’ll wait out here for the little prick.’

Marcus nodded at Shorty and climbed out of the car. Shorty watched with a moody expression as Marcus strode toward the entrance. The bouncers recognised him and let him straight in, with Marcus slapping hands with them. Shorty recognised the exchange of money and grinned, despite his mood.

Marcus hit the bar and ordered a drink, keeping his eyes peeled for Deez. He was in the moment, nodding his head to the Heartless Cru tracks playing, when there was movement next to him. Chink appeared as if out of nowhere.
