FREEBIES

Railwaymen tended to be poorly paid and took advantage of their work to obtain free gifts. Footplate crews, especially if working goods trains that had a more flexible timetable, could obtain bean sticks from the line side and carry them back on the engine. Mushrooms and watercress could be obtained in season. One driver on the Thornbury branch in Gloucestershire liked to stop and collect snails, which he cooked on the backplate of the firebox.

Householders whose gardens backed on to the railway could entice railwaymen to give them free coal. The trick was to paint a head – say of a cat – on a large piece of tin, cut a hole for a mouth and then wait.

The temptation was too great! Passing firemen would hurl a lump of coal at the target and try to score a goal through the mouth.
