CHAPTER TWELVE

Three men on horseback entered the camp, one of them leading a saddled horse with no rider. I pegged this one as being the backup ride, probably for Gillian Marsh and Lupe, if they were found.

I put the gun in my pocket and waited for the noise and the downwash to abate and the helicopter to move off to the west before speaking.

“There’s a man hiding out around here somewhere. He’s armed and dangerous, and possibly wounded. He shot his friend there while trying to shoot me and disappeared around that ridge. His name is Mike DeArmon. If my friend Felix dies, I will want Mr. DeArmon charged with Capital Murder and held in the deepest cell you have in the Randall County Jail. If Felix doesn’t die, then DeArmon is still guilty of the same for having killed Josh in the commission of a felony.”

“You must be Travis.”

I looked up at the lead man on horseback. He was likely in his sixties, and appeared to be as tough as nails. His face was chiseled and the scars on his hands and arms seemed to have their own scars. “I must be.”

“I wish you had waited for us before rushing this camp.”

“I wish I had too, but I came on them all of a sudden, and things went from bad to worse.”

He nodded. While the other two deputies dismounted and took charge of the camp, first inspecting Josh, then Sam, we continued our conversation.

“Listen, Deputy—”

“DeWitt. Steven DeWitt.”

“Listen, Deputy DeWitt. I’m going after Mike. I sure would like the company.”

He nodded and gestured to Sam. “What about that one there?”

“His chin tried to occupy the same space as my foot. I think he’s taking a nap.”

Deputy DeWitt grinned.

“If it’s all the same to you, I need to get going. I have to be at a dance tonight.”

“No shit?”

I shook my head. “Let’s just say I wouldn’t want my wife upset with me.”

“All right. Understood, and perfectly so.” He turned to one of the other deputies. “Alex, if it’s okay we’ll let Mr. Travis take the spare horse.”

“Fine by me.”

“So which one of you two is going to stay here and clean up this mess?”

“Stay here? Why, Jeff can stay here.”

“You Potter brothers must really love each other. You two can both stay. See if you can get that fellow awake, put him in handcuffs and lead him out of this canyon on a rope lead if you have to. Put Josh’s body in a bedroll. Someone will have to come back for him.”

“Aww crap. Okay.”

Deputy DeWitt gestured to the spare horse. “Mount up, Ranger Travis. Looks like it’s a manhunt for you and me today.”

I stepped up to the horse, took hold of the saddle strap and tested it. It was on fine, if slightly tight. I grabbed the pommel, put my foot in the stirrup and swung up.

“You’re a horseman.”

“I was riding by the time I was five.”

“Mighty fine. Mighty fine.” Deputy DeWitt clucked and his horse began moving.

I did the same and went around the manzanita bush where Mike had initially disappeared.
