Chapter 15

“Hey, you!”

Andrew momentarily froze, convinced it was Sarah’s father or a detective. The game was up, he’d been caught before he could finish it. But when he turned it was a woman standing there, someone he vaguely recognised. Then it hit him—the neighbour from below, Jackie or something.

“Yeah, what?”

He barely spoke to her or any of the neighbours because he liked to keep to himself and now he certainly didn’t want any of them getting too friendly and deciding to pay a visit. The way she called his name though did not suggest a friendly chat.

“You really need to keep the noise down up there or I’m gonna have to call the police. I don’t want to, and I know you’ve been through a lot of shit lately, but you can’t be yellin’ and shoutin’ all day and night.

“I don’t know who you got in there but the girl sounded like she was goin’ through hell. And you, you wanna be careful, police are gonna think you did somethin’ to that girlfriend of yours. I know you didn’t but tell them that.”

Andrew was shocked. He’d been out all day and as far as he knew no one had been to his flat. The day before Rob had phoned him to tell him about his game with Dave and Karen, but today no one had come. It had been a quiet day, Sarah semi-conscious from the beating he gave her before he left, stubbing out his cigarette on her tongue to keep her quiet. Or so he thought. He’d had sex with her after admiring the bloody scars on her back and buttocks and had kicked her a few times after she complained, several times to the head, shattering her nose for the third time. So how the fuck had she found the strength to start screaming?

“Sorry. It was just me and a friend, she got a little drunk and was messing about. I was out all day yesterday helping with the search party and well, earlier I was a little depressed again. Sarah’s out there somewhere, I know it, but sometimes it gets too much. Won’t happen again.”

“I know, and that’s why I didn’t wanna call the police, but…you ain’t helping Sarah by getting drunk and raucous.”

“Yeah, you’re right. Sorry.”

He left before she could continue the conversation. He arrived at the flat, let himself in and locked it behind him. He immediately went to the spare bedroom where Sarah lay on the bloodstained bed. Andrew stood there for a while glaring at her. She stared back, one eye almost closed and a yellow-purple colour around the edge from where he’d punched her.

“What am I gonna do with you, Sarah? Huh? I thought we had an understanding that you were gonna do as you’re told. That if you tried to call for help or escape, it was only going to make matters worse.”

He tutted and shook his head. What was it with people nowadays? All they had to do was what they were told and life would be so much easier, but no.
