Chapter 12

Alexander halted the timer on his phone as Emily’s car skidded to a stop in front of their house. “Five minutes difference,” he said, “and I’m never getting into the car if you’re the driver.”

“We’ve just officially started dating and you’re criticizing my driving?” Emily added a disapproving noise. “Not a good start, darling.”

“I’m going to assume that I’m in trouble whenever you call me ‘darling.’”

“So ‘darling’ is back on the list?”

Alexander twisted to look at her. “Are you pretending to actually take my words into consideration?”

Her smile faltered slightly at that.

“I was kidding, Em. If you thought I really didn’t want you to call me that, I know it’d never come out of your mouth.” He brushed his thumb against her lips that had curved into the sweet smile he’d grown addicted to. Alexander was still trying to reconcile the idea that such a strong woman was vulnerable in ways he never imagined.

He understood her fear now, because he saw what it meant to her. While she was more than capable of handling herself, no matter how dangerous the situation, she had locked her bruised heart away and forgot about the key. She had worked to build up walls, worked to be an island so she would never have to hand the key over to anyone.

Now she had given Alexander the key. And he was so humbled and strengthened by it at the same time.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“For what, silly?”

Emily tucked her hair behind her ear. “I swear I’m never like this. I don’t get offended by jokes.”

She wasn’t offended. She was hurt. Perhaps worried.

“You know that’s ridiculous.”

Her gaze dropped, and Alexander hooked his finger under her chin.

“It’s ridiculous because I see how amazing you are. Everyone sees how amazing you are; everyone but yourself. You don’t understand how I’m the lucky one, Em. Not you. And once in a while I’ll remind you about it.”

“Once in a while?”

He nodded. “Because I generally like how you look at me like you’re the luckiest person in the world. It feeds my ego like nothing else.”

She chuckled.

He took a few moments to enjoy her musical laughter before leaning over to give her a peck on the hair. “If Louise was driving like that, someone would’ve noticed,” he said. “We’re probably going to hear about this from Sheriff Hem.”

Emily had told him to drive as quickly as he could from Rick and Louise’s laundromat to their place. She wanted to see how fast Louise could have gotten there since she appeared soon after Rick arrived at their place.

Then she decided to hop behind the wheel and give it a whirl herself.

“We don’t even know if you’ve got a valid driver’s license. You might end up going to jail,” she said and laughed.

“How’s that funny?”

“It isn’t?” She shrugged. “Maybe I’m just in a good mood.” She took a deep breath and glanced at the timer on his phone’s screen.

“Since we’re doing this,” Alexander said, “I’m assuming that you believe Hank.”

“I know you don't trust him, and we have absolutely no reason to.
