CHAPTER 27

Closed Public Park

After activating and placing the diversion charge between gas pumps at the convenience store, Molka and Laili drove to the park, left their SUV next to Narayan’s SUV in the parking area, and made their way down the curvy stone path past blossoming cherry trees and well-groomed flower beds to the little clearing in the fir-covered hill overlooking the factory complex.

Two all-black dressed, younger Indian male Narayan team members set up and manned tripod-mounted infrared video and still shot cameras.

Narayan stood beside them—with his small radio clipped to his belt and the Bluetooth-style headset in his right ear—observing the factory complex through binoculars.

Molka and Laili arrived beside him, and Molka laid the gear bag on the ground.

Laili pointed at Narayan’s men. “What are they doing?”

He lowered the binoculars and addressed Molka and Laili. “Documenting the operation. A request by your organization. I trust everything went to plan?”

“All set for 2 AM sharp,” Molka said.

Laili said, “What’s the situation down there with the guards?”

He answered. “Same dispositions as two nights ago, four men patrolling the fence line, one roving the central area of the complex, one in the front gate guard shack, and, as confirmed by Jia Li, one to five others at various times standing outside the office building smoking.”

He handed the binoculars to Laili, who scanned the complex for a moment and then passed them to Molka, who did the same.

Molka lowered the binoculars, handed them back to Narayan, and checked her watch: 1:51 AM. “We need to get in position, but let’s do a radio check first.”

Molka and Laili removed their headsets from their front pockets, placed them in their right ears, reached into their back pockets, removed their radios, turned them on, and replaced them in their same back pockets.

Molka spoke into the headset: “Radio check. Radio check.”

Laili: “Radio check. Radio check.”

Narayan: “Radio check. Radio check.”

Molka said, “Everyone good?”

Laili and Narayan nodded affirmative, and Narayan said, “I’m obliged to remind you again the range of the radios provided to us by your organization can be spotty, and you may need to communicate with me by phone.”

“Understood,” Molka said.

“And you have the key to the gate padlock?”

Molka tapped her right front pocket. “Yes.” She picked up the gear bag, slung it over her left shoulder, and addressed Laili. “Let’s go.”

Molka and Laili used a bent knee technique to walk down the steep, tree-covered hill to its bottom and then took a crouched concealment position at the tree line’s edge. About three meters across a flat tract of ankle-high weeds sat the padlocked gate in the complex’s prison-high, razor wire-topped rear fence.

Narayan’s voice came over their headsets: “By my watch, I make it one minute and counting to diversion.”

Both looked down at their watches.

“Mine too,” Laili said.

“Same here,” Molka said.

Laili watched the digits countdown, “Five, four, three, two, one, boom.”

BOOM!

BOOM! BOOM!

Even nearly a kilometer away, the detonation’s audio signature played impressively.

Laili said, “Did you hear those secondary explosions?”

Molka said, “The fuel storage tanks going up, I think.
