Chapter Ten
Sheila
I had no idea the woods could be so big. It felt like we were walking for days. We stopped and slept when we needed, taking it in turns, even with my Wolfsbane protection. I could understand my mate’s paranoia, given what he had gone through.
I wanted to ask where we were going or when we were going to get there but thought it would make me sound too much like a bratty kid. I was a woman, if relatively newly minted, and had to act like it—mainly because of the situation. The rainstorm was the last time I saw Bronson laugh or smile. He went right back into stoic warrior mode as soon as the Wolfsbane was around my neck.
Just when I thought the forest would never end, the land shifted, slanting sharply downward, leading into a valley. Putting me on his back to keep me from potentially slipping down the embankment, Bronson made his way carefully down to the flat ground once more. Taking me by the hand again, he led me onwards.
“We’re almost there,” he explained, no doubt sensing my tension.
As we pressed on, I could feel the power vibrating through the earth. The mist broke to reveal a secret valley, a little patch of land untouched. The white clouds surrounded it like an ethereal wall. There was a definite change in feeling as we crossed from the rest of the woods to where the cabin stood. It didn’t look like much from the outside, just a standard camping cabin. Still, it was apparent that there was something extraordinary going on indeed.
“Stay back,” Bronson warned.
I obeyed my mate, walking back to the bottom of the front steps as he went up to the door. I didn’t know what the stuff was, but whatever he sprinkled on the door from the vial he took from the bag did the trick.
The door glowed bright yellow before returning to its natural brown. Laying his hand on it, Bronson leaned right in and whispered in a language I didn’t recognize. It sounded a little like German but different.
A bang echoed through the misty woods, and the door creaked slightly open, welcoming us. Heaving a sigh of relief that actually saw his shoulders sink, Bronson came back down to get me.
“What was that?”
“A protection spell. It is still active on the land. I just had to get it off the door, so we could go inside.”
“What is this place?”
“Somewhere safe. My dad set it up with the help of some witches years ago. It is completely undetectable, even by telepathy.”
Kicking the door the rest of the way open with his boot, Bronson led me into our new home. Unable to resist, I went straight to the bed, nearly collapsing on the sturdy mattress. I had never walked so much in my life. I would have thought that a supernatural creature of unknown power like myself could take cardio but apparently not.
“You’ll get stronger,” Bronson said, probably reading my mind.
“Promise?” I panted.
“Yes, right now, let’s get you cleaned up and fed.
