Chapter Ten

Tanner

The night was quiet and still. With the moon full in the sky, not even the owls dared to make a sound. My eyes snapped open. Whatever the sensation was that I felt back in Norway, pulling me to this part of America like a magnetic force, it was coming to a head.

I was ready—or at least as prepared as I could be. The front door was nailed shut and not an option. The back one had a stout lock that would hold. For a while, anyway. Not that they were going to get that close. Not if the dog repellent and wards I carved to the wood of the doors held, preventing approach by all manner of monster, both human and otherwise.

I got out of the bed, taking great care not to wake Leah. This wasn’t her problem, and I would do everything I could to keep her safe. And she would be safe as long as she was in the cabin.

At least not any more than I already was. Though I had a handy concoction memorized for heightened thought and faster reflexes.

Putting the cup in the sink and filling it with water, I went to the door, inching it open, reminding myself to get some oil for the hinges. It sounded like a damn haunted house.

The night was cool, though I didn’t feel it, despite my naked state. I stood on the back stoop, waiting for my mind to calm down to a manageable speed, doing deep breathing and focusing exercise to speed along the process. The fates were not going to wait forever.

Stepping down onto the soft grass with two feet, I walked around to the front of the cabin on four. My fur keeping the cold out even more. I resisted the urge to stop and howl at the moon. That bit of the pop culture-pushed mythology was true enough. Even though we still hated to admit it.

The air was electric, crackling with a sense I had not felt in years. The smell was unmistakable. It was the same heavy, phenomenon sent I had detected when Leah first got into the car. Only the scent out
