We spent a few days perfecting our routine in the library and as much as it killed me to hold off on progressing our plans, I knew it was important to get this right. While Plunger carefully used his gifts to create the two tunnels we needed - one leading down to the maintenance level and the other up towards the surface - the rest of us got to work at completing the task of painting the walls and removing the outdated books from the shelves. The cataloguing really was boring as fuck, so I'd been painting with Roary for the most part, slicking the grotty beige walls with a nice new lick of white.
"We need to figure out how long our window of opportunity is to use the tunnels once we execute the plan," I murmured thoughtfully as I worked so close to Roary that our arms kept brushing. It was totally a Wolf thing though, not some desire to be close to him in particular. And Iâd keep telling myself that until I was blue in the damn face.
"Aren't you planning to start a riot on the night we escape?" he asked in a low tone, glancing around even though we knew there was no one near enough to overhear us.
"Yeah. But I need to know how long the guards will spend trying to contain a riot themselves before they give up and release the Belorian. The last thing I want is that fucking thing stalking us through the tunnels and eating us all." I shuddered at the thought and Roary grimaced.
"No, let's not let that happen. So what do we need to do?"
"We need a test run so that I can time it. We need to get the inmates rioting and then make sure that all of us can escape the carnage and get down here fast enough to make our escape into the tunnels. We want to know that we'll be long gone before that monster is set loose to chase us or weâre going to need to think up some way to neutralise it."
"I don't think there is a way to neutralise it," he muttered. âThat monster was built to be unstoppable.â
"All the more reason to have a practice riot then."
"Did I hear someone say party?" Sin purred from behind us and I turned towards him with a grin as he moved forward to inspect our work. Plunger was getting dressed beyond him as Sonny and the other Wolves made sure the bookcases were stacked against the wall to hide the tunnel again, so it must have been coming close to the end of our session. "You missed a spot, kitten."
I turned back to the wall with a frown and Sin plucked the paintbrush from my hand while I was distracted before swiping it straight down the side of my cheek.
I sucked in a breath of surprise and turned to him with a playful growl. "You did not just do that."
"Do what?" he asked, grinning as he slowly dipped the brush back into the tin of paint.
