Chapter Seven

They went deeper into the jungle, battling through the continuous tangle of undergrowth, for hour after hour. They couldn’t go back. All that awaited them was death, like the fate of her horses. She recalled the gunshots that had echoed from the stables. Now her expensive string of horses had become meat to feed the fighters of Boko Haram. She had no doubt they’d killed them out of spite as much for horsemeat. It would have been easier to lead them away, instead of fixing up transport for the dead carcasses. The magnificent animals she’d brought into the country were dead. It was all over, her dreams of a new beginning, gone, drowned in a hail of insurgent bullets. “Where are we going?” Juba said, her voice uncertain, “Is this the right way?” Sarah had been pushing through a deep thicket after the path almost petered out. They were still following a game trail, but it looked untraveled in many years. “I think so. You just look after Junior.” She pushed on. The heat and humidity were terrible. In their haste to escape, they’d left the house without food or water, and thirst was their overriding need. They were dehydrated, and if they didn’t get water soon, they’d slow even more. Until they had no strength left to fight their way through the oppressive greenery that enclosed them like a straitjacket. “Junior is very hot,” the girl suddenly said, working out which branch of the path to take, “We must cool him down. Perhaps we can find a stream?” She gave a bitter laugh. “Juba, look around you. Do you see a stream?” “No, Miss Sarah.” They went on, and one footstep blurred into another, always going forward. Always pushing through impossibly tiny gaps between thick vines and trees, and she felt they were squeezing through a monstrous spider’s web. The spider was the oppressive Nigerian climate, and the web the impenetrable tangle of foliage, like a steel mesh. Will we ever get out, or will we die in here? I don’t know. She pushed the thought to the back of her mind. We’ll get through, and I’ll find help, even if it kills me. Once more, she wiped the sweat from her forehead, battling through yet another thick tangle of thin trees and vines. She was careful not to trip over the dozens of roots threatening to trip her. A sprained ankle would be a death sentence. She kept a wary eye out for poisonous snakes and insects. A single bite could signal the end. Without realizing it, she was stumbling forward on autopilot, her mind drifting, pushing foliage aside to find the path, and then creating a wider gap for Juba and Junior. She reached forward to push aside the next mass of branches and vines. They weren’t there. Her hands had found open space. To her astonishment, she was in the open. “Juba, look. It’s a road. We’re out.” The girl emerged from the jungle canopy, still clutching Junior, and her eyes brightened.
