Chapter Three

My heart stuttered and I tried to take a deep breath to get my focus back. The Vice President. Mr. “I accept all shifters of the world” had just conducted one of the most brazen attacks yet.

And somehow, I was the only one to be spared.

“What did you do?” I asked him.

Instead of answering, he questioned, “Do you know who I am?”

“Of course, I know who you are. Now what the fuck did you do to everyone?”

He physically cringed, shaking his head as he walked closer to me. “You see? That language? That is why you are all a bunch of animals.”

“Fuck you, Mr. Howard,” I reiterated while a few of his men chuckled in the background.

“Why are you still standing?”

“What did you do to them?”

His eyes darted to my stomach where I was now rubbing my belly and I immediately stopped when the evil grin began to grow on his traitorous face. “They will be fine…eventually.” He reached over a fallen shifter and picked up one of the coffee mugs sitting on the table. Lifting it up to his nose, he took a sniff and immediately put it down. “We were afraid you all would smell it.”

So, a drug then.

They would all pay for this.

Mr. Howard started to walk toward me, but he only got two steps before his security team blocked his path.

“Sir,” one of them said. “We strongly suggest keeping your distance. We don’t know how long the tonic will last.”

Mr. Howard quickly dismissed him with a wave. “I will be fine. She can’t shift anyway.”

All eyes focused on me, and I once again had to remove my hand from my stomach. The Vice President grinned, pursing his lips and shaking his head. Despite being one of the younger elected officials, the pure malice in his eyes would have one think he’d suffered through many wars and conflicts that made him cold and disconnected. But that wasn’t the case at all. This man had never been a soldier and he certainly didn’t know what it was like to grow up as something different. He was one of those silver spoon types and it looked like he’d now put his support behind a growing movement of hatred.

Stepping closer to me, he surveyed the room like it didn’t faze him at all. But there was a hint of fear underneath his arrogance. I could smell it. And with a glare of my own, I did my best to let that look tell him I knew his secret.

“Sir?” his lead guard cautioned again.

“I told you, she won’t hurt me. She can’t shift.” Taking another step closer he leaned forward a bit and whispered to me like best friends sharing a secret. “Pregnant, right?”

“I don’t need to shift to kick your ass,” I warned through gritted teeth.

He smiled and stood tall again. “I have no doubt. But you see those men behind me? They have orders to shoot to kill. No matter the situation. And I don’t believe a mother would take those kinds of unnecessary risks.
