Verity

I peek up through my lashes as Donovan comforts his wife, gently running a hand over her hair as he leans down to kiss her forehead. I return my gaze to the floor, not wanting to intrude upon their grief, and eventually, Evelyn’s sobs quiet.

I’m thankful that Liam stepped between us, acting as a barrier between me and their grief … although it’s more their tender touch, and the way Donovan lets his tough Alpha exterior melt away as he holds his mate in his arms that has me on edge.

I feel like I shouldn’t be staring at them, despite how badly I want to.

This depth of emotion isn’t something I’ve witnessed much, and it strikes me as far more powerful than the way my father chose to show his love in secret. Belatedly, I realize that I’ll never see my own parents embrace like this.

My father, even if he wanted to be a more caring man, will never again have the chance to hold my mother like that. I can’t help but wonder if there was ever a time when they were more tender to each other instead of floating about their lives like ghosts.

I’m instantly reminded of the few short moments I witnessed back in Solyna’s shop. Maybe they had been in love, at least in their own private way.

“Evie, dear, I need you to pull yourself together,” Donovan whispers into her hair, his words carrying through the empty entryway. “We must not assault a guest in our own home. Not without due cause and evidence beyond a shadow of doubt proving her guilty.”

“But Don,” Evelyn murmurs, looking up at him pleadingly, her eyes watery.

“But nothing, my dear,” the Alpha says, brushing a single tear away from her cheek with one thumb. “No matter how greatly we may wish to see one pay for what’s been done to us, we will not stoop to that level of hostility. I will not see death or destruction brought down on anyone without proof. We are the Bloodfang pack, and as such, we have a reputation to uphold. A duty to justice. A justice that will be found.”

His words give me little comfort. It’s clear by the tone of his voice that he still believes that I’m responsible for killing Felix.

For now, there’s no forgiveness to be found here.

However, despite how desperately he may wish to see me punished for what he believes I did, at least he’s willing to put his own reputation, and that of the pack’s, above his or his wife’s need for vengeance.

I suppose it’s a small relief to know that I won’t have to worry about them ending my life before someone can deliver actual proof that I’m guilty.

“Avery, show her to one of the guest rooms on the third floor,” Donovan orders. “She is to be watched at all times and kept away from the rest of the pack. I’ll have several Hunters sent to guard her while she remains under our roof.”

“I’d like her to remain with me, in my room,” Avery says.
