“Ever been inside a court room?” my boss and future father-in-law, Mr. Wilde asks, wiping hip shiny black shoes on a patch of grey, industrial carpeting before stepping onto the cold, tile floor of the federal courthouse.

I shake my nervous head, looking up at the massive concrete pillars, “Do mock trials in my legal accounting class count?”

He puckers his lips and narrows his eyes, “No, they don’t,” he says, giving me a quick once over as if he’s lost all confidence in my ability to pull this off.

Join the club asshole, I tell myself.

Mr. Wilde checks his watch. “We got ten minutes until showtime. This is fucking big, Liam. If we run trial on this, we’re gonna be drowning in news coverage all over the world.” He elbows our company’s investigative attorney and winks, “That’s a whole shitload of free global marketing, ain’t it Dick?”

Dick Sullivan , Wilde & Associates’ longtime lawyer that helped get this company into the top five, simply nods, “Can’t pass that up, Todd.”

Sullivan has a reputation for knowing people on every side of the law, in pretty much every situation imaginable. If there’s a case, he’s gonna know exactly who the players are, and chances are most of those players are gonna owe him a favor.

But he’s never been up against a company this large, this powerful. And he’s never had to face anyone like Donovan Kane.

Nobody has.

“If Dick says jump, you ask him how high. If he tells you to take your dick out and piss all over the floor, I suggest you follow suit, am I clear?” Mr. Wilde says, raising a brow at me.

I clear my throat, “Yup, got it. Do as Dick says, not as he does.”

Dick smirks.

We enter the courtroom itself, and I start to burn up immediately. The room seems to be packed with everyone who’s anyone in this state, and the fact that I spot Donovan himself from behind is definitely not helping matters. He’s sitting perfectly still, next to his own attorney. Donovan’s wearing a lavish, black suit, and his big, bulging muscles in his back look all too hauntingly familiar.

“After you,” Dick says, gesturing towards a seat at the prosecutor’s table.

I go to place my briefcase on the large slab of oak, but the plastic handle slips out of my sweaty palm. The room echoes as the briefcase comes crashing down onto the hard wooden surface. I swallow hard and glance over at Donovan. His head turns slightly to face me, and his eyes twinkle just enough so that only I could possibly even notice.

And it’s as if he’s sending me a message, at least I think he is… Relax, Liam, I imagine he’s telling me.

But that’s not going to happen, not today. That’s for fucking sure.

“All rise for the Honorable Robert Fiske,” the court bailiff, Vin Diesel look alike, calls out.

In walks Fiske, black robe and all, looking meaner than fuck.

I find myself taking slow, deep breaths. If I let the panic set in too deep, I’ll never recover.
