1115: The 4th CLY indicate that the situation in town is absolutely untenable due to fire from 88mms.

1235: The 4th CLY signal that 5 Tigers in town and a 6th outside it are trying to surround the lead squadron and soon after the commander of the 4th CLY says that he has been surrounded and asks for a smokescreen as cover.

1240: He asks for the authorization to scuttle his scout car. Granted.

1525: The head of the 1/7 Queens asks for more infantry as enemy infiltrations into V-B are multiplying.

1600: The 1/5 Queens receive the order to reinforce V-B.

1650: The head of the brigade warns the division commander that the situation in untenable. The latter accepts the abandonment of V-B but gives the order to hold on to the high places at all costs.

Day’s losses:

• 5th Royal Tank Regiment: 1 Cromwell;

• 4th CLY: 13 Cromwell IVs, 3 Cromwells, 2 Cromwell VIs, 3 Stuarts, 4 Sherman Fireflies (being 26 tanks in total);

• 1st Rifle Brigade: 14 Half-tracks, 8 Bren Carriers, 8 Lloyd Carriers.
