‘Thanks.’

‘And I’m okay. But from the way you’ve been looking at me, I’ve had a feeling you’ve wanted to talk to me after what I said last night.’

‘Yeah,’ I said. ‘Was it that obvious?’

‘About as obvious as the rock hitting you on the head. Is it okay now?’

‘Yeah,’ I said reaching up. ‘It’s just a bit sore.’

I waited for her to say more about her mum and dad. After all, she was the one who’d brought the subject up again. It was like she’d said enough but I wanted to be sure. And it felt easier to say it in the dark.

‘You can talk about it,’ I said. ‘Your mum and dad. I mean, only if you want.’

‘What?’ said Effie. ‘Are you an expert on death?’
