Chapter Nine

Rachel and Jack finished eating and paid their bill. They walked across the restaurant and stood next to Agent Carver and Jonathan Danvers’ table.

“Well, hello,” Rachel said, noting the startled look on Agent Carver’s face. “I didn’t know you two were such good friends.”

Agent Carver frowned. “Were you following me?”

Jack snorted. “Why would we follow you? We came here for lunch and saw you two come inside. Maybe you were following us.”

Danvers stood and offered his hand to Rachel. “I haven’t had the pleasure,” he said smoothly. “I’m Jonathan Danvers.”

“Rachel Emery,” she said, shaking his hand. “And I know who you are. You offered a reward to anyone who could give information on the killers of the young women here in Florida.”

“Ah. Rachel Emery. Your name is familiar,” Danvers said, glancing at Carver.

“Amber Johnston is roommates with Ms. Emery’s daughter,” Carver said.

“Ah, I see. Well, I’m happy that Amber is safe. At least one person had a happy ending,” Danvers said, smiling.

“I’m Lieutenant Jack Meyers,” Jack spoke up, shoving his hand at Danvers. “Of the Panama City Beach Police Department.”

Danvers shook his hand. “Well, it’s very nice to meet you, Lieutenant. I see Ms. Emery is in very good hands.” He smiled again. “Would you two like to join us?”

Rachel glanced at Agent Carver and saw a look of annoyance cross his face. “We’d love to, but just for a moment,” she said, sliding into the booth next to Danvers.

Jack grabbed a chair and sat at the end of the table, blocking any chance for Agent Carver to escape.

Danvers spoke first. “I was catching up with Agent Carver on whether they’ve had any leads in the serial killer case. I don’t just lend my money to help; I like to stay involved.”

“Really?” Rachel asked. “Was it like that six years ago in California when you offered half a million dollars for leads for that serial killer too?”

“Yes,” Jack said, staring at Agent Carver. “You were on that task force, too, weren’t you?”

“Hm,” Agent Carver grunted. “So, you’ve done your homework. It’s no secret that I worked on that case.”

“No, it isn’t,” Rachel said. “Unfortunately, that killer was never found. It’s also no secret that the officer found dead yesterday morning, Krigbaum, was also working in Los Angeles with the LAPD. That’s an awful lot of coincidences, don’t you think?”

Agent Carver narrowed his eyes. “People move around all the time. Have you always lived in Florida?” he asked her pointedly.

“It’s funny,” Rachel continued, ignoring his question. “Neither you nor Officer Wilson contacted me about Krigbaum’s death. Considering I gave her information about his attempted break-in at my house, I’d think someone would have informed me of his death.”

Carver frowned. “Break-in? I hadn’t been told about that.”

“I gave the information to Officer Wilson because she seemed more interested in the facts of this case than you did,” Rachel said. “I gave her Amber’s clothing as well. It might have evidence on it from the abductors.”

“Well, you’ve been a very busy woman,” Agent Carver said.
