2.

One morning Louise decides to attend a lunch lecture at the American Women’s Club. She brings Young Don with her. It will be educational, she tells him.

They’re in the embassy car. Louise glances in the rearview mirror. Following them is a Volkswagen crammed with Gestapo trainees, some of whom look as young as sixteen. Louise floors the accelerator. The Volkswagen stays close behind. She has a full tank of gas and guesses that the teenage trainees don’t. She merges with traffic onto the Autobahn, the Gestapo on her tail.

Don, squirming in the passenger seat, steals anxious glances at the Volkswagen in the rearview mirror.

Louise drives on, lips pressed together, eyes fixed on the road ahead as if daring it to defeat her. Her lipstick is blood red. Her nose is freshly powdered. Her hair is swept up in a bun. At some point, she pulls off the Autobahn and drives along country roads until, at last, the Gestapo trainees run out of gas.

Ha! she exclaims, and makes a sharp U-turn.

Awestruck, Don watches his mother lean out the window and wave at the teenage Nazis, screeching past their stalled Volkswagen.

Goodbye, boys!
