Once they reached the Adairsville police station, two of the uniformed officers immediately escorted Elias inside.

“Put in him Room 2,” Cargill ordered as he entered the building ahead of them.

Jack was getting out of Andrea’s car when Elias twisted around to see him. The younger man fixed him with a look of burning hatred – and then the two officers dragged him inside.

“Your number one fan,” Andrea commented.

“Maybe, but now I’m even more convinced he’s not the killer.”

“Why?”

“The killer would be cackling like this was all a game. Elias is pissed.”

“Maybe you disrupted his plans. Game over.”

“He led us right to him – how can he be angry about that?”

“Jack McDirtbag,” Li said happily as he got out of his car. Martinez grinned, too.

“You’re gonna call me that from now on, aren’t you,” Jack said wearily.

“You know it. Seriously, though, great save. Officer Dufresne said the way you tackled him, you should’ve played in the NFL.”

“Just lucky.”

“I’d rather be lucky than good any day,” Li said as he prepared to go inside.

“Can I be in there when you guys talk to him?”

Li’s newfound good humor only reached so far. “Nope, sorry. But you can watch over close-circuit TV if you like. Cargill said they’ve got the room wired.”

“Okay, I’ll take that.”

Jack and Andrea followed Li and Martinez into the station.

As they walked in, Andrea’s phone rang for what must have been the third time in the last 10 minutes. Just like the previous two times, she hit the button to silence the ringtone – but this time she put the phone into airplane mode. She looked worried as she did it.

“Everything okay?” Jack asked.

“Yeah,” she said dismissively. “Telemarketers.”

He didn’t believe her, but he decided not to press it.

“What about you? Everything okay with your jaw?” she asked.

“I’ll live.”

“I have to say, even though it was stupid – ”

“Here we go again,” he muttered.

“ – I was impressed you put yourself in harm’s way.”

He smiled slightly. “Thank you.”

“Still stupid, though.”

“You want to tell me again? You might not have repeated it enough.”

“A couple more times and I think I’ll be done.”

“Wonderful.”

Inside the station, one of the cops directed them to a room with a monitor. Onscreen was Elias, sitting on a folding chair behind a wooden table. He was dabbing at his bloody nose with a wad of tissue.

Li and Cargill entered the room. They weren’t pictured on the monitor, but Jack could hear the door, followed by the sound of their voices.

“Elias Johansson, my name is Detective Ning Li with the Atlanta Police Department. This is Adairsville Police Chief Craig Cargill – ”

“That ASSHOLE broke my NOSE,” Elias snarled. “I want to go to the HOSPITAL.”

“We’ll get you looked at as soon as you answer a few questions,” Li said. “First I’d like to know why you ran away from us earlier.”

Elias sat there in defiant silence.

Cargill spoke. “It doesn’t look very good that you were running away from us when all we wanted to do was ask you a couple of questions.
