Atticus led the way to the weir and pointed to the pool downstream. âIâve seen videos of her swimming in there.â
Coverdale wrote in her notebook. âWhere did you say the tripod was?â
âDown there,â he said, pointing.
Coverdale knelt down, moved the cow parsley aside and scratched the side of her chin. âNo camera?â
Atticus shook his head. âThere was nothing attached to itâI had a quick look, but I couldnât see anything.â
Coverdale went over to the bank. âWhat do you think? Accident or suicide?â
âSuicide by drowning is rare. Itâs difficult to do. Iâm not saying you can rule it out, though, and she was probably aware of something yesterday morning that wouldâve seemed pretty desperate.â
âWhatâs that?â
âShe got some very negative press. Google herâitâll be the first thing you see. Itâs possible it wouldâve affected her in a way where she did think about taking her own life. But would she drown herself?â He shrugged. âDonât think so.â
Coverdale pointed to the gentle camber of the beach. âShe wouldnât have slipped getting in there,â she said. âLook at itâitâs almost flat.â She stood and shuffled back to where Alice would have been if she were setting up the tripod. âOr she was getting ready here,â she said, her back to the water. She took a backwards step and then another, deliberately catching her heel on a knotty root that protruded through the soil. âShe trips, falls backwards and hits her head on a rockâlike that one down there. Sheâs knocked out and drowns.â
âThe body?â Atticus said.
Coverdale pointed south. âSomewhere downstream.â
âThatâs possible. The waterâs flowing quickly enough to take her away.â
Coverdale puffed out her chest, seemingly pleased that Atticus had agreed with at least part of her putative explanation.
âThereâs something else you need to know,â Atticus said. âAlice and her husband are in the middle of a very unpleasant, very messy divorce. Sheâs revealed information about him thatâs got him in hot water with the police, and he was behind the story about her that ran yesterday. Like I saidâhe contacted me about the car being found down here.â
Coverdale looked up from her notebook. âWhy did he call you?â
âIâve been working for him. His nameâs Frank Green. He hired me to dig up dirt on her.â
âAnd itâs relevant becauseâ¦?â
âA few reasons.â He held up his hand and ticked them off on his fingers, one by one. âOneâGreen broke Aliceâs arm recently, and Iâve seen evidence to suggest heâs made threats of violence against her. TwoâGreen has the motive to want to hurt her. ThreeâGreen probably knows she comes to places like this on her own when there are unlikely to be any witnesses. And fourâGreen showed absolutely no concern for her when I told him she was missing.â
Yaxley joined them just as his radio came to life. âHang on,â he said, reaching down to turn it up.
âBravo Alpha Two-One, this is Control. Over.â
âControl, this is Bravo Alpha Two-One. Go ahead. Over.â
âBravo Alpha Two-One, be advised that the individual you are looking for, Alice Green, has been reported missing as of ten hundred hours this morning.
