Hey darlin’,

I know you’ll probably think I’ve lost my marbles, what with the Internet and cell phones and all the other ways to communicate with you. But I did warn you that I like to write letters. I can’t stop thinking about you. Or our weekend together.

It hasn’t even been a full twenty-four hours since we parted, but I miss you already. I think you’re the first man I’ve met in a long time who wanted to know the real me, not the Dizzy who sings just to get laid. I was surprised that you accepted my invitation to lunch. I thought I’d blown any chance of getting to know you better. And I’m still not sure what it was that made me recognize that the loss would have been all mine, but I’m glad you saw through the cheap lines and bravado. I’m glad about a lot of things since I met you.

On the drive up here, I found myself thinking about all the things I’d wanted to do—to have—in my life. It’s funny, isn’t it, how focused we can become on one goal and not see so many of the others that we might have had slipping right by, until they’re almost out of sight. At the risk of making you jumpier than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, you’re now one of those goals for me. I used to dream about being a good father, a good husband. I tried my best, but failed miserably. But I won’t fail you. Seeing that smile on your face, hearing you call my name when we make love, these are the things that will fill the long nights without you.

Give my love to Bozo and Miss Alicia.

Sleep well, darlin’.
