Chapter 12

Rocky

The knock on my door is quiet, like the person doesn’t want to attract any attention. I scramble off the bed, knowing the soft knock can only be Gigi.

When I open the door, her face is streaming with tears. I take hold of her hand and drag her body to mine, holding her tight as she sobs into my chest.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, feeling the softness of her skin as I brush back the golden strands of hair that have fallen from her braids.

“It’s... it’s... it’s gone.” Her voice stutters, like she is trying to catch her breath.

“What’s gone?” I ask, taking her in my arms and holding her tight as I walk to the bed.

“The money... the coins. He’s going to kill me,” she whimpers. “Or make me have his baby and throw me away afterwards.”

“What the hell!” I growl.

She tells me what Gio told her, but something about it isn’t right. The man has never mentioned wanting a baby, so I think he’s trying to scare her into handing back what is his. And it worked.

At least it would have worked if the bag of gold hadn’t gone missing.

“You’ll have to stay a little longer while we work out where it is,” I say, laying her on my bed and holding her hand. She sobs, wiping away the tears with the arm of the tee shirt.

I like that she came running to me. It makes me feel like she is mine, and if Giovanni is going to scare her, I’m going to be the one who protects her from her fears. “I’ve got you.”

She sighs as she lets me hold her.

I wrap my arms around her shoulders and pull her until her body is flush against mine. Whenever she’s near me, my muscles loosen, and I realize how tightly wound I’ve been.

The seconds slip by too quickly as I hold her, but our moment is shattered by a sudden knock on the door. I stroke my fingers over her face and whisper, “I won’t let him hurt you.”

She exhales deeply and gives me a delicate nod.

“Come in,” I say. Inviting him into my room is perfect. This way, I can protect her from him.

“I want a word with her,” Giovanni grunts as his gaze flashes from Gigi to me and back again.

Her hand grips my arm tightly, and I can feel her body shaking as she silently begs me not to abandon her.

“Let me talk to him,” I say to her.

With a burst of energy, she scurries up to the top of the bed and chews on her lip.

Gio looks at Gigi.

She sits with her back pressed against the headboard, her chin rests on her knees and her eyes lower to the stare at the bed.

“Do you have something for me?” he asks, stepping into my bedroom.

She wraps her arms tighter around her legs and shakes her head. “It’s gone.”

“Of course it has. Where did you hide it?” Gio grunts.

“In your son’s bedroom. Luca must have stolen it,” she rushes, holding herself closer.
