Animals Are Intuitive

The Nez Percé say: “Every animal knows more than you do,” and I agree. The more we study them, the more we will realize what cognitive abilities they have. The Sioux say: “With all things and in all things, we are relatives” and, of course, that means animals, too.

Animals are all heart and feeling and sensing. There are people who don’t know some of the different problems humankind encounters as much as an animal does and yet we feel we are smart. Dogs and cats also have a telepathic sense, as this next story relates. Diane writes, “One Christmas Eve, my husband brought home a puppy. The kids were so excited, I could hear them squealing with joy all through the house. I looked at the puppy and said, ‘That is the ugliest dog I’ve ever seen. Take it back from wherever you got it. I don’t need one more thing to take care of.’ Our children begged me to keep it. They promised me they would take care of it. All mothers know the truth in that statement.

“In the following months, that little wet black nose, big brown eyes, wiggly stump of a puppy grew into the most beautiful dog I’d ever seen. But she looked the same as she did when she was a puppy, so it must have been me who changed! I came to love her very much. She and I became soul companions. I swear she could read my mind. Whenever I came home and saw that she was sitting in the corner, I knew she had chewed something up. She was so smart! I couldn’t punish her for it because she was already in the corner! What more could I do?

“Early one morning, before school, the kids and I loaded Aussie up in the car to drop her off at the vet for her annual shots. The clinic wasn’t open yet. I decided to drop her off at my grandmother’s house nearby and put Aussie in her fenced-in backyard. The plan was that I would call my grandmother from work and tell her about Aussie, then I would pick Aussie up after school and take her to the vet on our way home.

“I was a schoolteacher, and all heck broke loose at school when I arrived. In the craziness of the school day, I completely forgot to call my grandmother. After school, I picked up my kids and went to my grandmother’s house. What a shock when I got there. Since I hadn’t called and my grandmother didn’t recognize the dog, she let it out of her yard. My Aussie had been running around loose all day in a strange town. My grandmother was very sorry, but I knew it was my fault for not making the call. The kids climbed into the car and we went to look for her. We walked up and down every street in her neighborhood. My son Jason
