Chapter 8

XARX

“Aim for the middle,” I order. The weapons spin, the blast hitting the Demiin and bouncing off. It takes a while to bore through the plasma-metallic exterior. It seems unphased by our presence, set on Vardaess. We’re just an annoyance. If it so much as turns toward one ship, it darts out of the way. Ships aren’t its goal. Vardaess is. My mate and all the Irrgs are on the surface. Vardaess comes into view and my heart beats to save her. She’s on the surface doing good while helping Thadora. Damn the ablakati!

My heart catches as the Demiin advances, so close to Vardaess. “All ships between the planet and the Demiin. Do what you can to stop it from advancing.”

The fleet of New Para ships flies in formation with me into the lead. If only the Nathroxian military were here, with the advanced warships to detonate their nuclear bombs in the center of the plasma. It halts, undulating before us.

“Fire!”

The ships send blasts of lasers, nuclear canons, and heat rays into the center of the Demiin. It splits, pulling apart. Smaller Demiins are easier to destroy as it loses energy. The blast’s intense heat causes a reaction to the edge of the plasma, as it scatters, parts of it floating away, careening through space.

“Thadora, report.” I hold the comm before my face.

“Sire. What’s going on up there? We’re dividing into camps and leading the helpless underground,” she informs me.

“Freya? Is she alright?” I already know the answer. My mate is alive; my heart knows this.

“She’s aiding Boldian at the Vodilin.”

“You’ve separated from her?”

“Sire, I know this concerns you, but there is too much to do down here. We’re trying. You should be proud of your Terran. She’s taken to leading with grace. The Irrgs are beginning to revere her.”

A smile stretches across my face. Yes, I expect no less of the future Queen of Nathrox. “Good, Freya deserves respect.”

“Sire, what’s going on up there?”

“We’ve fired on the Demiin, as we are between it and Vardaess. It’s beginning to break apart.”

“It will come here in smaller portions then,” she replies.

“I know.” My jaw flexes. “We need to fight it. It’s large enough that we barely move it. With all the power flowing into it now, it’s just beginning to split.”

“It’s casting a gloom over the planet, the sick iridescent light reaching us.”

Too close. I turn to the navigator. “We need to lead it away from Vardaess.”

“Sire, it’s splitting.”

“We need it away so that it’s pieces won’t surface on Vardaess. They don’t have the weapons to fight it there,” I tell him.

“We will circle the Demiin and fire at will, turning it away. It doesn’t want to consume the ships,” Fargsh says.

“It will if it knows the better meal awaits on the other side of us,” I remind him.

We fly in formation, advancing on the Demiin. It moves back slightly. “It’s working!”

“Open fire,” the New Para commander says.

“Fire on the left, it will turn right,” I advise.

The ships on the
