“There is not room on the plane for my other form,” he says. “When we are alone, on the ground, I will show you.”

“You promise?”

“I do,” he smiles and the tension between us rockets up like my blood pressure.

I grab his head and pull him in. When our lips meet for the first time, my head explodes with a million images and feelings, and thought forms a tumbling whirlwind.

The way our mouths fit together. The way his lips move against mine. The taste of him. It’s all familiar, welcome, normal. It’s like coming home after a really long journey. That thrill of walking into your place when you’ve missed it and didn’t even realize that you did.

We break apart slowly. Our lips cling, resisting breaking contact. In some strange way I’m alive and acutely aware of my body. As if it’s new territory, fresh, and somehow different. I lean back in my seat, heaving air as if I’ve run a marathon. I’m fully aware of every sensation, from the movement of the cabin air to the minuscule vibrations that the engines create in the floor.

He’s watching me silent, waiting to see what I’ll do next, probably. I touch my lips, rubbing them, to preserve the kiss or wipe it away. I’m not sure which. Suddenly it hits me what happened, and my cheeks flush hot. I can’t meet his eyes so I stare at the floor.

“Uhm, yeah, sorry about that,” I say.

“Hello, this is your pilot,” a voice comes over the intercom. “Please take your seats, we’ll be landing shortly.”

Grateful for the distraction, I shift back in my seat and put my seat belt back into place. When I finally finish, my heart is back to something more normal and my cheeks aren’t burning. The plane descends, and he still hasn’t spoken.

God, was I terrible kisser? Did he not like it? Is he regretting taking me out? I’m incredibly self-conscious, so I cast furtive glances in his direction. He is unreadable, sitting in his chair as if he doesn’t have a care in the world. His perfect cheekbones, that gorgeous hair, and absolute certainty.

Damn it, it’s sexy.

The engines whine louder and louder, then the wheels bark as they touch the runway, and then we’re on the ground racing towards a stop. The plane taxis around and comes to a stop. I undo my belt and stand up.

Wadjet stands at the same time, and we’re right on top of each other. His eyes lock onto mine, inescapable. I try to step back, but my chair has me blocked. I trip on it and start to fall, but he catches me easily, steadying me.

I’m embarrassed I can’t stand up, and embarrassed about the kiss too. He doesn’t move, staring into my eyes, silent. Strong. Implacable and dominant. He owns the space, literally and figuratively.

“Do not be sorry,” he says.

“Huh?”

“You said sorry about the kiss,” he says. “Do not be.”

“Okay.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for,” he says. “I will never regret or pass by a chance to kiss you.
