“Those papers are such rags,” Rosemary spat. Imogene cocked her head curiously at the comment.

“Rosie is still angry with the London papers for what they printed about her butler, Wadsworth, when he was accused of murder,” Vera explained as if there was nothing out of the ordinary about that at all.

“You have a butler?” Pippa asked, impressed.

Imogene rolled her eyes. “I think the more pertinent question is why was he accused of murder?”

Rosemary explained, as succinctly as possible, how Wadsworth had been found standing over the body of a slain police officer, and it had fallen to her to find and foil the real killer. “Even though I cleared his name, he’s still endured more humiliation than any innocent man deserves. It’s one thing when it’s news, but gossip and hearsay have no place in the press. They treated him as though he was guilty from the start, mostly due to his occupation and social status, and unfortunately, people pay too much attention to splashy headlines. Someone at the Pennington mansion is a murderer, but the rest aren’t.”

“I applaud your integrity, but let me ask you something,” said Imogene. “Is your butler still suffering due to what the papers said, or has the whole debacle blown over?”

“I suppose his life hasn’t been changed irrevocably,” Rosemary admitted.

“Precisely. The roar will subside once the real murderer has been put to justice. Mr. Pennington doesn’t deserve your pity. He’s a cad who didn’t possess enough self-restraint to abide by the rules of his marriage. A man like him is probably just as duplicitous when it comes his business. If that’s the case, his son would be complicit, presumably. As far as Colette goes, her reputation is already circling the drain.”

“In Colette’s corner of society, poisoning Ruby Snow might actually improve her position,” Pippa replied thoughtfully, evidently having abandoned her previous position against gossip. “Ruby was an even bigger social pariah than she is. Still, Colette’s not nearly as dim as she likes everyone to believe. She wouldn’t be so vocal about hating Ruby if she’d actually killed her; she would have pretended they were friends and then publicly mourned her to drum up sympathy.”

Pippa made a good point, one even Imogene couldn’t refute. Rosemary had to hand it to her; Pippa was the type to see all and say little. Well, except for now. Rosemary could see why Oscar was interested and hoped for the sake of the pair’s budding relationship that he didn’t turn out to be the guilty party after all.

Once she got going, Pippa didn’t seem ready to stop. “Colette and Oscar both had reasons for wanting Ruby dead, but you know who deserves a closer look? Mr. Pennington’s man, Leo. He hasn’t been with them for all that long, but it seems like he’s wormed his way in deep.”

Imogene’s eyelid twitched and she shook her head emphatically. “Jade would never have let her family slide downhill the way they have. It’s sad to see how much has changed in the short time since she’s been gone.
