Chapter 11

Either Bruce or Jenna must have come down to check on me during the day, for I discovered a pile of blankets covering my body, and the black curtain closed around the couch. They had installed two black curtains, which hung from the ceiling just like in a hospital–one around the couch, and one around the coffin. The one around the couch looked somewhat out of place, and I suppose that if any one had seen my new living quarters, they would be very puzzled; but who would see it any way? I pushed the curtains back into place and out of my way.

I stared at the phone. I was not expecting any calls on my cell phone tonight, but still, it rang into the darkness of my cellar. No one had this number except the cats, and they were upstairs. Perhaps it was a wrong number.

I suddenly remembered the night before. Was it a dream? Had he really come to me that night or was it a longing for his touch one more time? I put it off and answered the phone. “Yeah?” Face it; I was tired. I did not feel like being nice.

“Hello, mystery woman.” A familiar but faceless voice was on the other end. I had no idea who this was and I was not in the mood for games.

“Who is this?” I tried to see the person with my new set of remote viewing skills, but I could not see him, all I saw was what he could see. That was not much help.

“Detective Frank Passare. You don’t remember me?”

“How could I forget?” I thought aloud. He sounded just as handsome as he looked. His rugged jaw and incredible smell haunted my memory.

“We’ve, well, I’ve got something maybe you could help us with…a missing woman.”

I could tell by his wavering voice, he was not sure he should be asking me to help. He was good at hiding his uncertainties, but not good enough to fool me.

“I don’t know, Frank,” I said running a brush through my hair. His thoughts were too close for me–I could see through his eyes, hear his thoughts. I did not want him to know how close I felt.

“Look, you found the kid.” He cleared his throat. “I know who you are, Nikki. I don’t know how you did it, but I know who you are. I won’t tell any one you’re alive. I promise.” His voice cracked again. I could hear the hesitation of promise. Would he really be honest?

I swallowed the pain in my throat. I loved to hear my name as no one said it enough anymore. I concentrated on his location then viewed the pictures he was holding in his hand. Suddenly I felt numb. “What about the department?

Will they want to speak with me?”

“It’s completely off the record, Nikki.”

“I can’t tell you over the phone.”

“Where can we meet?” He whispered. I could see that he was walking into another room.

“No where in the city. Berkeley. We can go to a bar in Berkeley.
