Sparta was sidelined or rather had sidelined itself; the city state had not fought against Philip and not bemoaned the sack of Thebes. It was Epaminondas who had destroyed Sparta’s hegemony. Having kept out of the Corinthian League, Sparta was still ready to take Darius’ subsidies and launch a second front in Greece while Alexander was away. It had a go at Crete between 333–332 BC and failed. Their king, Agis, decided to try and stir the Peloponnese the year after. Athens would have none of it, nor would the Arcadians; giving Antipater the balcony he needed to launch a pre-emptive blow, raising the Spartan siege of Megalopolis (now Megalopoli in south-west Arcadia) which had also refused to join the conspiracy. He killed Agis in the process, striking the head from the snake. That was the last heard from Sparta for a while.
