Even when Einstein humbled himself to apply for position at the University of Bern that involved giving lectures and charging a fee to anyone who attended (attendance being entirely at the discretion of the students), he encountered a faculty that was unaccountably reluctant to hire him, unless undue prejudice played a part. Applicants for that position were supposed to write a short thesis to be considered by the hiring committee, unless they had already accomplished something significant in their field; accordingly, Einstein declined to write a new thesis and instead sent along copies of the seventeen different papers he had published since leaving school in 1900. Only one person on the hiring committee felt that he had done enough to be hired without having to write the thesis; unsurprisingly, Einstein declined to write it. At least the fact that Einstein had finally received his doctorate at last meant that he was promoted at the patent office and received a one thousand francs per year raise. He was still making rather more money that he would have in an academic position.
