Chapter Fifteen

“Hello Jonathan, how are things going? Got any updates on that hooker?”

“Uh…no, not yet,” came the hesitant reply.

“Come on Jonathan, you promised me you would have this taken care of over two weeks ago. What’s the hold up?” I stormed.

“Your girl, Alice, seems to have vanished in thin air, Jack. My boys were staked out at the airport for several days and she didn’t show up. They even pretended to be police and showed her picture to a few security guards. One of them remembers seeing her there a few times, but haven’t seen her in quite a while,” Jonathan replied.

“Look Jonathan, she is there. Your boys are just not looking hard enough. I know she is still there because she called me yesterday, and threatened to send the tape to my wife, and the number she called me from had a New York area code. Damn it, Jonathan. Find her!” I shouted.

“I can’t man, I can’t,” Jonathan reacted angrily. “My boys have stopped looking and said they won’t do anything else unless I send them more money, and I don’t have any more to send…unless you’re willing to make another down payment.”

“Wait a minute…are you trying to play me, Jonathan? Trying to get more money out of me, is that it? Well, let me tell you…”

“No, I’m not trying to play you, Jack. I’m just telling you like it is,” Jonathan interjected, his tone elevated. “New York is a very expensive city so if you think about it, it takes a lot of cash to organize stakeouts, cover travelling costs and take care of their daily needs. It is worse when the person they’re looking for seems to have gone in hibernation, or something.”
