The Bunker…

The two-story log mansion that stood before them looked to Vicki like something from a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie. That breed of chick-flick holiday movie where the family mansion doubles as their Bed and Breakfast business and the handsome handyman helps the beautiful daughter save it from foreclosure.

Strings of colorful Christmas lights adorned the shrubs and small Evergreens that lined the drive. All leading toward a ski lodge-style log structure with massive three-foot diameter log pillars supporting an arched entryway.

To each side of the entry arch, the house extended for nearly a hundred feet. It seemed to Vicki that it must have taken hundreds of trees to build the colossal house.

“Can you believe there’s not a single piece of wood in that whole house?” Raul mused beside her.

The others had just walked up behind Vicki and Raul, having grabbed their belongings out of the bed of Arn’s and Randy Jones’s trucks before making their way toward the house.

Kate sounded dubious, “No wood, huh? Then what are all those log-looking thingies doing there, Senor Raul?”

Raul smiled, and without looking away from the building said, “Concrete, Kate. The entire structure is made of concrete. Ryan initially wanted two layers of concrete sandwiched with three layers of steel on all the outside walls, but Arn convinced him that the log look with a single plate of steel imbedded inside the walls would be just as secure and much less likely to become misshapen over time.”

Walking up to the massive pillars outside the entrance and running his hands over the surface, Randy said, “It’s looks like real wood, hard to believe it’s not.”

“We added lots of brown dye to the concrete during the forming process,” Raul grinned at Vicki, “It added quite a bit to the cost I’m afraid, but I have to admit the result is quite astonishing.”

The front door opened at that point and the twins called in unison, “Aunt Jilly!” and ran up to Jill who enveloped them in her arms, covering them both in kisses.

“Hey guys!” Bianca Salinas said, mussing the twin’s hair as she walked by, “Glad you all made it home.”

“Vicki,” Jill said, “This place is incredible. Bianca and Robert have been helping us get the kid’s rooms all set up and they’re dying to see more of the place but Arnie said they had to wait for Uncle Ryan to show everyone around.

She glanced around and asked Raul, “Where is Arnie, Raul? And Ryan and the guys for that matter? Was there a problem?”

Raul began to stammer then Vicki took her sister by the arm, leading her in through the door.

“Jill,” she said quietly, “Jilly, I need to talk to you in private. Take me to me and Ryan’s bedroom, will you?”

A worried look transformed Jill’s face as the color began to drain from it. She turned toward Vicki, grabbing her by the shoulders and turning her, almost violently, so they were facing each other squarely.

“What happened, Victoria? Tell me now! Arnie’s hurt isn’t he? He tried to play hero and got hurt.
