Niassa Reserve

This massive 16,200-square-mile (42,000-km2) reserve is situated on the southern border of Tanzania and encompasses an area no less than twice the size of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, or double the size of The Netherlands! Visually stunning, the scenery is comprised of giant inselbergs, baobab trees and waving palms reaching out to the sky from what must be one of the largest protected areas of miombo (brachystegia) woodland on the continent.

This is Mozambique’s largest reserve, and since it is not a national park, there are a number of people living within the reserve’s boundaries.

Wildlife includes elephant, sable antelope, buffalo and African wild dog, along with lion, leopard, eland, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, kudu, bushbuck, impala, wildebeest, zebra, waterbuck and hippo. Elephant here are famous for their large tusks. Three subspecies endemic to the park include Boehm’s zebra, Niassa wildebeest and Johnston’s impala.

It must be said that as the reserve receives very few visitors, the resident wildlife is not very habituated and may therefore be difficult to approach closely. On the other hand, this poses a unique opportunity to view wild animals in a truly wild and natural environment that has remained largely free from human interference.

More than 370 bird species have been recorded including Pel’s fishing owl, Taita falcon, Bohm’s bee-eater, African skimmer, Stierling’s woodpecker and the African pitta.

VINTAGE

Lugenda Wilderness Camp, located on the Lugenda River, offers 8 fan-cooled tents with large verandahs, a boma, and a swimming pool. Game drives, canoeing and escorted walks are offered. Access is by scheduled air charter from Pemba. The camp is open from May 1–December 1. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed.
