Chapter 11

“BEGINNING IN THIRTY minutes!” A voice rang out as soon as the space around me was stable again.

Other portals started to open one after another, disgorging more participants for the Selection Tournament. First to join me was Nicole, then Sigismund, followed finally by Greg and his morose expression.

Try as I might, I couldn’t see any other participants anywhere — presumably, the territory they had thrown us into was just that big. I also understood why we weren’t starting for thirty minutes: such a massive number of people couldn’t be teleported all at once.

“Am I right in saying that the Elves skipped a stage here?” Nicole asked as she walked over to join me. “I used to hear people say that there would be a Regional Selection Competition before we got to Sector level.”

“Not only that — even the Regional Competition was only supposed to start about a week from now,” I added. “I think they really skipped quite a lot of things here. First the Demons, now the Dragons. The Elves just haven’t had time for tournaments. Are you all better, by the way?”

“Olcrad helped me out as a reward for the Dragons,” replied Nicole. “I’m not just better — I’m also a lot stronger.”

“So we’re just waiting, then?” Sigismund walked over to the wall of energy around us and tried to walk through it.

He failed. There were no electric shocks or sparks. The wall simply refused to let the Gladiator pass.

For a little while, I just stared out into the thick forest in front of us. Just like last time, the first stage was going to take place among thickly-clustered trees. This was presumably to make it as hard as possible to find the ten columns of light (which, after all, stretched all the way up into the sky).

“Beginning in twenty minutes!” The voice was coming from the space around us, and when I heard it, I swung into action immediately.

An earthen platform appeared in the air next to me.

“Nicole — we need to find out where the nearest column of light is,” I said. “Ideally, before the competition actually starts. Hop on.”

She didn’t argue with me. In fact, she seemed to trust me implicitly in everything. I raised the platform into the air slowly, expecting to find a “roof” above us at some point, but there wasn’t one. The Elves had simply installed a wall — they hadn’t bothered with a ceiling.

After raising the platform above the tops of the trees, I held it there for a little while, until I finally heard Nicole shout down:

“Got it! Bring me down!”

“Beginning in ten minutes!” The relentless countdown continued.

No punishment was forthcoming for our little stunt with the platform, which meant that we hadn’t broken any rules. I brought it back down to the ground. Nicole hopped off, took out a knife, and started tracing a map of the area for me on the ground.

“We’re right here,” she began. “The nearest column is here. The second-closest one is here. There’s a lake there, too, and the third column is right in the middle of it.
