INVITING YOUR KIDS TO OVERCOME

Outside the air was crisp and cold. Forty degrees! Practically freezing for us Californians. We filled every minivan to capacity, trying to take fewer vehicles onto the base. I drove off with my own four kids and two more, one of whom was a two-year-old crying loudly for her mama in another car. The road was dark, and we were out in the countryside. We all shouted with excitement when a coyote crossed the road in front of us. I played happy music to wake us all up and get little Audrey to stop crying.

We were about halfway to the air force base when I realized the tags on my car were expired. “Oh, dear Lord,” I prayed, “please don’t let that keep us from getting on the base. And please don’t let them look too closely at my driver’s license.” I had a sneaking suspicion it was expired too. Geez.

“Guys, we have to pray!” I called over the music and the still-crying two-year-old, now joined by my two-year-old.

“Why, Mommy?” they asked.

“Because I just remembered that I didn’t put a sticker on the car that it is supposed to have, and I don’t know if they care about things like that at the base. But we have to pray that they don’t and that we can get in.”

I turned down the music and prayed aloud over the crying. I was pretty sure there would be no problems with my expired tags and getting on the base. But just like my tired brain worried about the bedbugs the night before, a part of me was worried right now. Letting the kids into the problem didn’t mean I was scaring them. It meant I was showing them that we don’t have to handle any problem on our own.
